I understand that promoting child development and learning is essential for my understanding of how to better identify and provide for the young children in my care. Knowing and understanding young children’s characteristics and needs helps me to better prepare myself in the material and curriculum that I want to introduce them to. By having this knowledge of each individual child, I can create positive developmentally appropriate activities that will help to stimulate the growth of all developmental domains. Furthermore, I will continue to plan for activities that are of the children’s interest, to help to scaffold the learning. In addition to this, having awareness of the multiple influences of young children’s development and learning helps me to have in mind that all children come from diverse cultural and linguistic contexts. By always being thoughtful of this will help me understand how this can have either a positive or negative effect in their development. I also demonstrate my understanding of promoting child development as I use my developmental knowledge to create an environment that is healthy, respectful and allow for children to feel safe, a place where I support and challenge as I continue building up on their everyday learning.
Artifact
For my artifact, I am including the observations I monitored at my practicum site along with other observations performed in my child development classes as evidence of my understanding of NAEYC Standard 1 “Promoting Child Development and Learning”. These observations demonstrate my understanding of the standard because I know the importance of knowing young children’s characteristics and needs depending on their age and have a base knowledge of what I encounter in all of the areas of development. I will continue to cultivate my learning in early childhood education to promote positive developmental effects in young children.
